VKN 16: Forensic Aspects of Addiction

Virtual Learning Centre (VLC) has been actively running weekly online NIMHANS ECHO more than ONE year. The mission is to expand the capacity to provide best clinical practice care for Addiction & Mental Health (AMH) among health care professionals and assess the outcome in India. The Project ECHO, US is the intellectual partner of this initiative.

The heart of this NIMHANS ECHO model is its hub-and-spoke knowledge-sharing networks, led by expert team of NIMHANS who use multi-point videoconferencing to conduct weekly virtual training with community health care providers i.e., Doctors, Public Health experts, PG Trainees etc. In this way, doctors, nurses, and other clinicians learn to provide excellent specialty care to patients in their own communities. The health professionals present clinical case and seek clarifications regarding standard managment. This is followed by a didactic lecture by subject expert.  The learning happens both from the NIMHANS team as well from their own peers. This LIVE (Synchronous) sessions are integrated with an e-Learning module certification for participants.

At this point there are 700 health care professionals including medical colleges have partnered to this free of cost knowledge sharing platform. Approximately 15 classrooms and 50  individual health professionals participate in this weekly LIVE videoconference (synchronous) based sessions. NIMHANS ECHO has been acknowledged by ‘Prime Minister Maan ki baat’ as well as in ‘Mental Health Innovation Network’.

We have also initiated monthly NIMHANS ECHO in the area of Psychiatry Rehabilitation (monthly 4th Friday) and Perinatal Psychiatry (monthly 3rd Friday). This interactive online program is accessible in any internet enabled devices including smart phone and tablets.

This initiative is on sharing best clinical practice, up-to-date knowledge and developing learning loop in Addiction Mental Health by Virtual Learning Centre (VLC), NIMHANS ECHO, Organized by Centre for Addiction Medicine (CAM), Department of Psychiatry, NIMHANS, Bangalore.
